A panel convened by the FDA to examine the safety of steroid injections to treat back pain has decided not to issue a warning about this treatment. Few people who get these shots may be aware that the FDA has never approved them for use in treating back pain. This despite the fact that the treatment has been around for more than six decades. The panel did not address the efficacy of steroid injections. This remains in dispute. But, for now, at least, the FDA has concluded that these injections are safe. The panel did find one exception for steroid injections in the cervical spine.
