For people collecting Social Security disability benefits, the question may arise: should I go back to work? The answer starts with the inquiry as to whether your disabling conditions have improved. If you are not healthy enough to return to full-time work, there is no decision to make.
Options For Going Back To Work
If, however, you have gotten better and want to return to work, there are several ways to do it. A recent article in Kiplinger lays out the various options. If you are considering returning to work, it is worth your time to read this article. In it, you will discover that Social Security has a variety of programs designed to ease your return to employment. The main program is the so-called Ticket To Work (TTW.)
A Carrot And A Stick
The terms of TTW are attractive, including keeping your Medicare coverage even if your disability benefits end. But, keep in mind that every carrot has a stick.TTW is designed to get you off of disability. If you dip a toe into this program, Social Security will take note. The chances that they will review your case and unilaterally cut off your benefits will increase.
Be Sure Before You Start
I suggest that you not partake in such programs as TTW unless you are rather certain you are ready to go back to work. If you are, TTW can make that transition easier. But, if you are only pondering the possibility, I would avoid TTW and other programs like it. Wait until you are certain you can work again.
Have you gone back to work after being disabled? Did you participate in TTW? How did it go? Let me know.
