As the partial shutdown of the Federal government drags on, disabled Americans are being to feel the pinch. Fortunately, Social Security is not affected by the shutdown. The agency is open and functioning. But, the collateral effects of the shutdown are going to reach the disabled soon.
Federal Buildings Could Close
One issue that looms is that some Social Security hearing offices are in federal buildings. Even though Social Security is still open, the government may shutter the buildings that house them. This would likely arise due to a lack of staff to keep the building operating. It could also result from a lack of security workers to keep the premises safe.
You Cannot Get More Essential Than Food And Shelter
Other issues for the disabled include such essentials as food and housing. By some estimates, the food stamps program could run out of funds as early as March 2019. The shutdown has forced Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to not renew rental assistance contracts for many poor, elderly, and disabled Americans. This could mean that these most vulnerable among us could be evicted and left homeless.
The shuttering of the E-Verify system for confirming the citizenship of new employees means that the disabled cannot hire workers who assist them, such as caregivers.
A Nation Held Hostage By One Single Man
All this over a wall to address a crisis that does not exist. If you believe that those among us most in need of assistance should not be held hostage to the irrational whims of a single man, let your elected officials know. Demand that the government reopens.
First They Came For The Disabled. . .
You may not be disabled, but if this hostage situation goes on much longer, this shut down will affect you. If taking workers hostage to gain advantage works this time, we will see it every time there is a political dispute. The next shutdown might claim your job.
Don’t be a victim. Call your member of Congress and demand action.
