Recently I blogged about people taking a drug called Hydroxychloroquine in hopes that this would either prevent or treat COVID-19. As you will recall, this plan was recklessly pushed by President Trump, who asked people what they had to lose in taking the medication. We now have a better idea of what was at stake.
Fatal Side Effects
A New York Times article reported on a study of Hydroxychloroquine on patients who had COVID-19. The results were not good. Not only did the drug not treat COVID-19, but more people also died on the drug than those who did not receive it.
Pause and think about that for a moment. President Trump asked Americans what they had to lose taking a powerful medication that has never been shown to have any anti-viral effects. For some of those Americans, what they had to lose was the most precious thing they ever had–their lives. Now we learn that President Trump forced a prominent scientist out of his job for questioning the efficacy of Hydroxychloroquine.
Please Don’t Take It
Please, don’t take Hydroxychloroquine in hopes of treating or prevent COVID-19. Remember, too, that many Americans who need this drug to treat terrible autoimmune disorders are going without due to the misplaced use of Hydroxychloroquine.
Trust The Best Minds, Not The Worst
A vaccine or an effective treatment for COVID-19 is coming. The smartest people in the world are working on this non-stop. Wait for the fruits of their labors and avoid the advice of charlatans and quacks. For now, stay indoors and be safe. Unlike Hydroxychloroquine, that will help against the spread of the pandemic.
