Even though the smart strategy is undeniably to delay taking your Social Security retirement benefits as long as possible, too many people still don’t do this. But this might be changing. A new study in Forbes shows that more Americans are getting with the program. Among the most encouraging developments: a sharp drop in the number of people claiming benefits at age 62. The still-too-high number is 44% of retirees taking benefits at age 62. But that is down from 58% in 2005. Only 11% of retirees wait past their full retirement age to start collecting. But that is up from 5% in 2008. Let’s hope these numbers continue to move in the right direction. When to take Social Security benefits has much to do with the quality of life a retiree can enjoy. With any luck, more people will make the right call and wait until age 70 to collect.
